Corita, Corita, Corita

Inspired today by the Boston skyline's Rainbow Swash, I've pulled together some splashy finds for wardrobe and home. Created on the side of a giant gas tank by nun/artist/activist Corita Kent and critisized by some for featuring the profile of Ho Chi Minh in the blue stripe, Rainbow Swash is a city landmark that satisfies both latent communist sympathies and our imperial quest for foreign energy all in one!

Original painting, oil and water. Emulsion Arts. $29.

Hand printed pillow. Art by Albion. $56.

Tote bag. Pom by Pomegranate. $27.

Postscript: Whats up with the blog title today? I have A Tribe Called Quest's Bonita Applebum stuck in my head, thats what. Bonita, Bonita, Bonita.

Sunshine Daydream

Summer faked us out here in DC. I naturally assumed that the 80 degree temps in February was signaling  1) the coming Mayan Apocolypse and 2) a great opportunity to build a base tan. So I packed away my winter wardrobe only to get blitzed with two weeks of 50 degree weather; or what I like to call the Eeyore of temperature gradients.

So today, I'm picturing a cluster of this goodness on a sunny white wall in honor of summer's betrayal of my trust.

"Sunny Day" 8x10 photo print by The Maple Tea House. $19.

"I Love Summer" Abstract oil acrylic painting by Agnese Marhele. $220.

"Orange Merging with Rose" Original watercolor by Malissa Ryder. $60.

"Kitchen Art-Lollipop" original photograph by Marianne LoMonaco. $15.

Globe Trotter

I almost skipped over this little masterpiece before I realized just exactly what was going on. From afar and lit from within, it looks like your standard statement piece; gorgeous, but you don't really know what the hell is going on.

Thank goodness that Glass Lion Home included a close up, because the "Raleigh" is not your run-of-the-mill pendant lamp. The artist uses several hundred paper rosettes snipped from vintage maps, encyclopedias, books and dictionaries from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s.

If you have ever tried to curl paper (2010's Thanksgiving placecards haunt my dreams), you'll understand that this pendant is a steal at $130.  Plus, if you spring for this globe, your dinner guests  might just pick up some obscure Jeopardy knowledge via osmosis.

Honey, I shrunk the biosphere

I'm no mathlete, but I've never been more enthusiastic about dodecahedrons than right now. Based out of San Francisco, Meg A. Myers creates these geometrical gems from recycled window glass.

Like tiny elfin greenscapes for the gnome who prefers Palm Springs, I can picture a cluster hanging in a sunny window or nestled on a bookshelf.  Also, succulents are having a moment. From bridal bouquets to wedding favors, these hardy little desert sponges are widely available and practically immortal. I find mine at the Georgetown West Elm, and they also sell online.

So go ahead, create your very own miniature Babylon with Meg A. Myers glass terrariums.

Be Our Guest: Betty James Originals

[Inspiration photo courtesy of Leslie Bacon]

Today's post was inspired by Bacon, Leslie Bacon. Leslie is a brilliant decorator/collector of tramp art and pig paraphernalia whose ideas never cease to amaze me. (Check out her recent spread in Country Living). The other day, Leslie sent along a photo of her new guest room, in which she used Ric Rac to cover up an old wallpaper seam instead of stripping and repainting the whole room (like I said, brilliant).

This inspired use of ric rac, that delightful trim shaped like cartoon bacon, sent me on an Etsy hunt. So thank you Leslie for indirectly bringing me to Betty James Originals out of West Bend, Wisconsin. This shop is so sweet my unborn babies' baby teeth just fell out. Aside from the hand embroidered onesies and bibs, she makes the kitchen towels pictured above, the kind of product Anthropologie wishes they sold. The kind of product so folksy and awesome I wouldn't be surprised if I saw it on SNL's next enstallment of "Bein' Quirky with Zooey Deschanel." Please enjoy.

The Weekly Bro Down: Go Go Gadget Cufflinks!

Welcome to the second installment of The Weekly Bro Down, offering up Etsy's finest finds for our gentlemen friends. I could write 100 posts on all the incredible cufflinks on Etsy, but these three choices will have to suffice for today. If you survive a night with the flamethrower-cough-I-mean-working lighter cufflinks, we can progress to something more advanced. Yours truly, Grasshopper.

Impress the Swiss Miss in your life with this pair of vintage silver and baby ruby-studded watch movements.  Steampunk cufflinks by Time In Fantasy. $52.

I don't condone smoking, but if I did, it would be seriously hot to watch some guy in a tux light his cigarette with a secret cufflink lighter. Careful, according to the shop owner these babies also get seriously hot.  Cufflink Hub. $150.

For the gentleman camper/sailor/secret agent, never lose your true north behind enemy lines with these working compass cufflinks. RagTrader. $20.

Me Write Pretty One Day

People are often unpleasantly surprised at what chicken scratch my handwriting is, mistaking my correspondence for that of a circus elephant that learned to wield a writing utensil.  BUT, just like I dream of being a really great hockey player (I can't skate), and wrestling baby sharks (last night), I also dream that I have an impeccable artistic hand.

Getting a calligraphied envelope in the mail is always so exciting, and if your handwriting is as appalling as mine, let Pink Ink Paper & Calligraphy do the hard work for you. Pink Ink will customize a return address stamp for you, pulling the wool over the eyes of unsuspecting letter recipients (Just hope they are so blown away that they don't notice the  front...) Return Address Stamp. $38.

Crafty tip: This stamp would look great in white ink on a colored envelope. To ensure the white ink really "pops," sprinkle the wet ink with white embossing powder, shake off the excess and heat with an embossing tool (like a mini hair dryer). You can emboss any stamp to make it really stand out, and I use this little thingamajig from Paper Source. What does an embossed stamp look like? Click here.

Minty Mouse

[Not for sale, suckers]

I have a confession to make. Mr. Etsy Detective and I own two cats, and they are glorious. The fat cat featured above is Opie, but Boo is gunning for a career in politics and has asked that he not be featured in any exploitative internet content. Weighing in at a lean and mean 25 and 22 lbs respectively, the only thing these brothers love more than raw shrimp and vanilla ice cream is catnip. Fresh, potent catnip. Luckily (for them and us), we grow it in the backyard, feed it to them, and enjoy the ensuing  sumo wrestling match.

For those days when our little catnip patch isn't flourishing, I think the adorable knit catnip mice by ViveLeChat could definitely fill the void. $6.

So Fetch-Floating Gold Hoops

"If only you knew how mean she really is... You know that I'm not allowed to wear hoop earrings, right? Yeah! Two years ago she told me hoops earrings were *her* thing and I wasn't allowed to wear them anymore. And then for Hannakuh my parents got this pair of really expensive white gold hoops and I had to pretend like I didn't even like them and... it was so sad."

-The venerable Gretchen Weiners

Unlike Regina George, I can't really say that I'm a "hoops" kinda girl, as I typically prefer my earrings to fall solidly in the "non-yankable" category. A pretty alternative, today's finds feature a floating hoop for all tastes and budgets. You'll have to click through to their shops to see them "on the ear," but every time I look at these fun little studs the blonde in me kicks in and I think to myself, "Wow, they are just...floating there!"

"The Regina"- I know, right? - 14k solid gold hammered studs. Blue Hour Designs. $120. (oh look at you, fancy)

"The Gretchen" - If your father invented the Toaster Struedel - Simple gold hoop earrings. Hook&Matter. $42.

"The Karen" - Your nailbeds suck and you made out with your first cousin (I kid! I LOVE these)  - Hand-shaped circle post earrings. Lavenders. $16.

I've got the World on a String

Happy Monday everyone. I've determined that much like his mother, this baby o' mine is exceedingly lazy on the weekends. And then, like clockwork, after worrying all weekend that he's become a perma-fetal couch potato, I sit down at my desk Monday morning and he kicks (literally) into high gear. As do I, apparently. So apologies for the lack of weekend posts, and heeeeere we go!

Monday's find is a favorite here at Etsy Detective, and has made me very popular at birthdays and holidays (I bought Rome for my sister after her study-abroad program ended.) Searching for a personalized gift that doesn't look like a mall kiosk monogrammed beer mug?  Look no further than Karen M. O'Leary's Etsy shop, StudioKmo.

Karen's pen-and-ink prints and paper-cut Masterpieces with a capital M are a stunning yet restrained tribute to some of the most beautiful cities on the planet. Some day, I will own one of her insanely intricate paper cuttings in a floating frame, hung on a perfectly distressed exposed brick wall.  In descending order from the top: San Francisco paper cut, $1100; Boston pen-and-ink print, $35; Washington, D.C. stretched canvas, $145.

Linen Love: Choisette

Today's finds come to you from Choisette, creator of gauzy, chic linen pieces for house and home.

The first piece is the Joey Scarf, eminently deserving of an afternoon at the (Green or Flea) market. $32.

As for the second find, its hard to be clever when the shop owner out-wits you in every way, and her description of this beach towel is dead-on:

"this is the ordinary beach towel's bohemian sister, the one who rides a vespa in espadrilles, smokes gitanes and has a cute dutch boyfriend."

So out-cool your plebian terrycloth counterparts and consider linen for your lounging. Choisette says her towel is softer, more absorbent and dries faster. Plus, sand doesn't stick to it like conventional towels. Just "shake it out, et voila!" Plus, linen gets softer each time you wash. Linen beach towel: $60.

The Weekly Bro Down: Sam's Natural Skincare

After several requests from the more stubbly sex, Etsy Detective has decided to begin featuring finds for the men in our lives. Be it working compass cufflinks or canuba wax chapstick, I intend to be your Etsy sherpa.  Let the Weekly Bro Down commence!

Today's featured line of products comes to you from Sams Natural. Mechanic-turned-personal-hygiene-guru, Sam's products are made in America with simple, all-natural ingredients. So toss out that nearly empty bottle of Pert Plus thats been lurking in your shower since 2007, and check out some product you can proudly display on your sink (except for the Down There Repair, hide that.)

Door #1: Cedar and Salt Shoe Bags. $9.95.  I agree with Sam, seriously, please buy these, your boat shoes smell like The Plague.

Door #2: Down There Repair. $8.95. I am told that guys can get a little "chafey." Let Sam fix you up.

Door #3: Olive and Rosemary Beard Oil. $10.95. A high percentage of my male friends routinely rock Axe-Men worthy facial hair and it's getting to the point where I need Down There Repair for my cheek. Smooth it out with some beard oil.

The Snozberries Taste Like Snozberries!

Etsy Detective has a soft spot for two things; fresh produce and local artists. Wait, strike that, reverse it (?)  Lucky for me, I stumbled upon a watercolor cornucopia this morning.

If you're lucky enough to receive a set of these inedible but gorgeous little cards by Cambridge artist Mallie Loring in the mail, it might be a struggle to decide whether to send to friends or keep them for yourself. They are most definitely fridge (and frame) worthy. Set of 5, with envelopes, by MallieLoringStudio, $15.

"I'm A Cool Mom"

Mr. Etsy Detective and I took a trip to a baby megastore today, and among the particle board furniture and breast pumps fit for a commercial dairy farm, there were diaper bags, lots of mediocre diaper bags.

I'm thinking that this vintage-looking, unisex messenger bag ought to cure me of the fashion atrocities I bore witness to today. Roomy, durable and equally, "Oh this old thing? Picked it up on a cycling trip through the Dutch hinterlands," for both Mr. Etsy Detective and I, this bag might just have to make the trans-Atlantic trip to us. I owe it to my unborn child. Waxed leather bag, hand-made in Belgium by TreeSizeVerse. $258.
